What is Leading for Accountability?

How much accountability resides in your firm? If the answer is "not much" it is time to look in the mirror and ask yourself whether or not you are leading for accountability. If not, are you worried about high turnover, low morale, finger-pointing and other employee issues? Leading people is one of the toughest challenges facing professional service firms today.
For the past 20 years, our firm has been involved in organizational change, from mergers and acquisitions to restructuring to handling heavy turnover. In each case, a central question has always been how to maintain employee commitment and leading for accountability in the midst of constant flux.
Today, employee accountability and engaging the minds of employees in the work of their firms has never been more important. The rapid expansion and contraction of the workforce as the country has moved along an economic roller coaster has eroded employee loyalty. Along with it, employee accountability and commitment are being tested to the limits. What is needed is no less than a collective change in how we lead. Leading for accountability is that change and means that we recognize the role of intrinsic motivation.
I have been in your shoes, leading a 30+ person professional services unit with a $12M annual revenue. When I was asked to lead the unit, it was characterized by 35% turnover, no leadership and declining revenue.
Two years later, turnover was zero and revenue and morale were steadily improving. It is said that if you want to change behavior, change the way people think. Leading for accountability works.
